Inflammatory bowel diseases, mainly ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease occasionally require surgical intervention in the treatment of the patient. When surgery is necessary during pregnancy, there is understandably much concerns and anxieties shown by the carers and the patient regarding adverse effects of surgery on the pregnancy and the mother. I present a case of a subtotal colectomy and ileostomy at about 6 weeks gestation. I shall also review available literature on the impact of surgery and safety in continuing pregnancy following surgical intervention during pregnancy.
